The Eye Hospital Lunsar was started in 1975 by the Baptist Convention of Sierra Leone.
The Baptist Convention believes in the unique responsibility of men towards God and the need to love and help each other. The story of John the Baptist, the healing of the blind, became the leading story to start this Social Ministry amongst other ministries such as schools and health clinics (John 9:1).
The German Christoffel Blind Mission (CBM) was the main partner during the start and growth of the Eye Hospital.
During the 1980’s the Eye Hospital became teaching hospital for the West African College of Surgeons. Agricultural rehabilitation of the blind was started at nearby Makump.
During the civil war from 1991-2003 the buildings of the Eye Hospital, Mabasseneh hospital and rehabilitation of the blind were used by the rebels as headquarters. The clinics came to a tragic end when the rebels came. The staff was forced to run for their life and walk and live in the bush for weeks.
After the war the buildings were restored with the generous aid of English Department For International Development (DFID).
The Eye Hospital has activated between 2005-2011 many partnerships in order to achieve their general objectives. This website will help to encourage and inform the partners about the activities.
